Of late, the English version of a graphic Japanese novel known as the one piece manga series has become immensely popular in the U.S. The manga chapters that have been written by Hiroya Oku have been on publication quite regularly since the year 2000 in a Japanese magazine called The Weekly Young Jump. And it is still ongoing. Each individual chapter of the popular series is released about every 15 days.  

The one piece manga and anime series is about the story of a teenager Kei Kurono who dies in an accident following which he becomes a part of a semi-posthumous game wherein he along with many other recently deceased men and women is forced to hunt and then kill aliens. These missions are extremely dangerous and many die on these missions only to be replaced just as Kei Kurono’s appearance.

Hiroya Oku put a stop on the series for some time after the completion of the first series so as to find time to work in the second phase, i.e. Phase 2. Phase 1 is made up of a total of 237 chapters. The next phase i.e. phase 2 known as Catastrophe was first released on 22nd November 2006 and carries on from chapter number 238 onwards through to number 303. And the final phase of the series is expected to begin shortly after a brief break. 

All chapters have been collected together by Shueisha in one piece manga online which led to the first volume of the anime series being released on 11th of December 2000. And as of now, 26 volumes have been released and published by Shueisha. Very recently, in the month of July 2007 to be precise, Dark Horse comics acquired the rights for the worldwide release of the English versions of Gantz. As such the Gantz manga had its first English volume publication in June 2008. And the English publications have moved on from being published quarterly to being released on a bimonthly regularity. In Spain it is published by Glenat and by Planet manga in Germany, Italy and Brazil. And publications in France and Argentina are taken care of by Tonkam and Ivrea respectively.    

There has also been a Gantz anime that was directed by Ichiro Itano and has animations created by Gonzo. The series ran for 13 episodes which were followed by a sequel called Gantz: Second Stage. This sequel went on for 13 more episodes. Thus the two seasons comprising together to form a 26 episode series. The animated series too was launched in North America by ADV Films who got themselves its license. The gantz anime series is distributed by MVM Films in the UK and by Madman Entertainment in Australia and New Zealand.
